Context

A city reborn
Ypres was completely destroyed during the First World War. Its rebirth symbolizes human strength and collective reconstruction. Picanol, founded in 1936 and gradually becoming a global player, is now the city’s main employer. A sense of continuity anchored in a place shaped by resilience.

More than an office

This project is an architectural tribute to the revival of the textile industry. A story of making, belonging, and looking forward while honoring what came before.

"From the sheep grazing outside, to the weaving machines inside, to the fabrics dressing the interiors: the circle is complete."

Concept

The shuttle as DNA

The elliptical geometry reflects the shuttle, the heart of the weaving process. It represents continuity, tension, rhythm, and connection. This shape became the DNA of the architecture.

Two layers, one building

The design consists of a concrete plinth that engages with the industrial context behind, and above it, a glass ellipse that appears to float. Oriented north–south, it offers a continuous 360-degree view. A contemporary belvedere overlooking the historic landscape.

Rooted in the land

The building belongs to its site: open, modest, yet confident. Bronze louvers, water, and glass reflect the surroundings, creating a constantly changing play of light. The boundary between inside and out fades away, letting nature and architecture flow together.

The sustainable mindset

Designed with a true sustainable mindset, this project integrates green roofscapes and generous planting to enhance biodiversity and comfort. Rainwater recovery reduces reliance on mains supply, while strong bike transportation facilities and EV charging support low-carbon mobility—bringing water, landscape, and movement together in one future-ready building.
